DUO LIS À LIS – LIS LÄNG SOPRANO & LISA MARTI PIANO

  • WOMEN, LIFE & LOVE

Don’t Close Your Eyes – Toads and Old Ghosts

In order to perform Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und -leben without perpetuating sexist stereotypes, singer Lisa Läng has entirely rewritten the original poetry by Chamisso.

WOMEN, LIFE & LOVE is an autobiographical work that explores growing up, queer love and identity, activism, and self-care in a patriarchal world. The revised title alone signals that a woman’s life involves far more than devotion to a husband and children.

The new version starts by addressing the roles and expectations imposed on a child categorized as female at birth and during their upbringing. As in Chamisso’s original cycle, this version concludes with a ninth poem, where the speaker reflects on their life and passes on their struggles and achievements to the next generation.

ABOUT THE DUO LIS À LIS: Western classical songs about women without sexism? Queer representation in Western classical music? Hard to come by. The Bernese duo Lis à lis (Lis Marti & Lisa Läng) aims to change this. They use Western classical music as a platform for queer-feminist advocacy, creating programmes that blend contemporary classical music, literature, and queer-feminist activism.
